Latvia is a nation of surprises, crammed with ornate architecture, unspoilt countryside and a non-stop nightlife.
Perched
on the edge of the Baltics, Latvia is an intriguing mix of the classic and the
cosmopolitan. The capital, Riga, is a vibrant hub with elegant buildings,
rolling parkland, luxury hotels and trend-setting bars. But as you head away
from the city, leaving the bright lights behind, you discover a land of scented
pine forests, tranquil lakes, sandy beaches and spa retreats.
As with
all the Baltic states, Latvia is a country of striking contrasts. Spring and
summer tend to be bright and can be warm – with very long days towards
midsummer. This is a great time to explore the outdoors or sip a coffee at a
pavement café. During the autumn the nights draw in and the trees put on a
spectacular show. Winters can be dark and snowy, creating a magical atmosphere
in Riga’s cobbled streets and medieval centre.
